Louis Farkovitz Oil Lamps and Candle Holders

Alien Egg

 Fortress

I love architecture and structure; I designed this lamp to look like a powerful temple or fortress, guarded by 8 flames in its oil moat!

Hexagon

I guess I’m an architect wannabe!   I love structure very much, if I really had it my way, I’d make this one 10 feet tall! I guess this little silver one will have to do for now!  However, I am open to sponsors with a vision…

Burnt Egg

The burnt egg was just another case of spontaneous combustion. A friend gave me this weird touristy brass kiddush cup (chalice), it had a stem and base but the weird part about it was that it had a strange sequence of holes punched directly below the rim of its mouth, rendering it undrinkable and quite unattractive to boot. So I took it upon myself to salvage it. I removed the stem and burned holes throughout its entire surface.

Fountain

This oil lamp was inspired by my love of fountains. It is designed to burn six wicks and is made in sterling silver.

Pagan/Wicca

Although maligned for centuries, the pentacle, or five-pointed star, is actually a symbol of man open to infinite compassion of the divine. You can open yourself up to that perfect love and perfect trust when you light the sterling silver Pagan, or simply enjoy this beautifully crafted lamp's gentle glow as it spirits you to your sacred space between the worlds.

Oil-abra

This piece is about seven inches in diameter and four inches high, and was made as a model for what is to be full-sized candelabra that will measure approximately two feet in diameter and will be about sixteen inches high. Made in sterling silver, it hangs from a hand-made chain and has receptacles that hold small glass vessels for floating oil wicks. I used it in my home as a mini-chandelier and loved the romantic atmosphere it created.

Kristen's Crystal Lamp
(made with Herkimer Diamond center piece)

Louis made this oil lamp for me as a Christmas present. We both love shiny sacred items, so Louis the goldsmith seemed instantly attracted to my quartz crystal and gem collection. I have a large collection of crystals that I have dug from the earth since 1990. He asked me if he could take one of my crystals to make something for me. I gave him a piece that I treasure greatly. I fully trusted that he would honor the sacredness of this super clear Herkimer Diamond crystal.  I wasn't disappointed.

Combining the high quality crystal in its raw form with silver is one thing, but add flickering flames of fire and you have a special kind of magic. Louis gave my precious crystal a throne of silver. It sits prominently in the middle of three bands of silver with jig saw puzzle cut outs.

Herkimer Diamonds are very high lustrous quartz that come in many sizes of double terminating crystals. They are considered valuable because they only come from a limited area of upstate New York just south of the Adirondacks. Many people believe the crystals have healing spiritual powers and they are sometimes called dream enhancing crystals.  Regardless of your beliefs, the crystals beauty and unique qualities cannot be denied.

The lamp is shown burning on a piece of my mother's china.  I love the contrast of the flame with the crystal, the silver and the gold on the edge of the plate. I think it looks very rich and elegant but in an organic almost primitive way.

I love what Louis did for me and my Herkimer.  I enjoy seeing how he respects the materials that he works with and I was touched by his thoughtful gift.

Star David

My original intent was to make a free-standing miniature sculpture of a triangular pyramid. Then I had a sudden stroke of inspiration, and realized I could make a 3-dimensional Star of David by adding an additional pyramid. I surrounded the structure with a flaming fortress, and crafted three lion legs for it to sit upon. The whole piece is sterling silver.

Yud Kay Vuv Kay

This sterling silver candelabra is an oil-burning lamp used to inaugurate the Sabbath and other holidays. The lighting of olive oil is a tradition that goes back thousands of years, and is a sanctified method candle lighting. The four aloe-like leaves each carry one letter, which is burnt into the leaf: the Yud, the Hey, the Vov and the Hey, spelling out one of the many holy names of God. Please allow 4 to 6 weeks for delivery.
